Inside the Experience
Scallywag’s, nestled in the heart of New York City at 508 9th Ave, stands out as a warm and inviting Irish-American pub that feels like a home away from home. From the moment you step inside, the lively yet cozy atmosphere wraps around you—a perfect blend of traditional charm and modern comfort. The buzz of friendly conversations, the charm of live music, and the unmistakable aroma of hearty, well-crafted dishes fill the air.
The true magic here lies in the experience curated by the vibrant team led by the cheerful owner and attentive staff like Catherine and Ro, whose quick wit and genuine warmth elevate every visit. Their service is more than just efficiency; it’s a personal touch that makes guests feel genuinely welcomed and well-cared for.
The menu pays homage to classic Irish comfort food with a metropolitan twist. The shepherd’s pie and bangers and mash earn their rave reviews, offering rich, savory flavors that stick with you long after the meal ends. The cheeseburgers, goosebumped with juiciness and flavor, are unforgettable, matched only by the crispy, perfectly seasoned sweet potato fries and fries that guests can’t stop praising. For fish lovers, the fried fish is divine, and the grilled salmon salad surprises with its hearty, satisfying portions.
Scallywag’s is also a destination for perfect pints, boasting what many claim to be the best Guinness pour in all of NYC—a feat underscored by the abundance of Irish accents that greet you in the pub, signaling authenticity. Whether you’re nestled by the bar or soaking in live music, each sip and bite feels steeped in tradition and care.
In writing this, I find myself drawn not only to the food but the undeniable spirit of Scallywag’s—a place that radiates warmth, community, and robust flavors. It’s more than a meal; it’s a genuine slice of Irish hospitality right in New York’s vibrant landscape. Next time you’re near 9th Avenue and craving a pint or a meal that feels like a hug, Scallywag’s should be your go-to.
“ This was a great little place. It was pretty busy when we walked in but we were seated at the bar immediately. (By the very cheerful owner, we later found out)The bartender, Catherine, was wonderful. Friendly, great service, quick witted and made a killer drink. We stayed for 3 more and had some nachos while we visited. They were very good. Next time we visit the city, I'm going back to this place. We had a great time with very reasonable. prices. ”
“ We were freezing and looking for somewhere to eat, ended up at scallywags. Ro welcomed us in, with her lovely smile and sense of humour. She went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Service was fantastic! The shepherds pie and bangers and mash were excellent. We definitely would recommend this establishment. Live music there too, what more could you want. Thanks Ro for making this couple of Aussie chicks night with your hospitality. ”
“ Great Irish American pub. Music. Guinness. Came back for Shepards Pie and sweet potato fries. ”
“ Great little traditional Irish pub. Enjoyed a nice Sheperads Pie and the lad from Donegal serving us was very personable. ”
“ We dropped in on our first night in Manhattan. We had researched places around our hotel before arrival and found Scallywag’s, and made a rough plan to go sometime during the trip. I’m glad we went! The atmosphere was so cozy and relaxed. My travel companions ordered the cheeseburger, and I ordered chicken tenders. Their burgers were unbelievably good, and I ate every last bite of the chicken tenders. The fries were well seasoned and served steaming. The food was delicious! I believe the owner himself waited on us, but we didn’t catch his name. I assume he was the owner since he was Irish (I’ve never interacted with an Irish person, so that was super cool to hear his accent!) We sat at a high table by the brick wall and felt so relaxed in the atmosphere. Since it was Christmas, the walls, doors, and bar area were decorated with a beautiful, lighted garland. My only (very small) complaint was that the music was a bit too loud before the live music started. When the guy that was performing started, we were eager to stay and listen. He played the electric guitar so impressively and had a beautiful voice! He had a book of songs for requests, and the variety of music he knew was impressive. Super cool guy and very friendly. I wish I had remembered his name because he was amazingly talented! For us three traveling Texans, it was such a great experience on our first night in Manhattan. If ever in NYC again, we will be back! ”
